BISHOP LAWRENCE H. WELSH
A vespers service for Most Rev. Lawrence H. Welsh were at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 18, in the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis. On Tuesday, Jan. 19, Archbishop Harry J. Flynn presided at the Mass of Resurrection at 2 p.m., at the Cathedral of St. Paul, 239 Selby Ave., St. Paul. A memorial Mass was at noon Wednesday, Jan.20 for the Holy Spirit Catholic Community with burial in the Rock Springs City Cemetery following the Mass. The memorial Mass was conducted at the SS. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church.
Pallbearers were Larry Graham, Ed Baker, Garry McLean, Rob Spence, John Tarufelli and James Daniel.
Welsh, auxiliary bishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, following a lengthy illness.
“Bishop Welsh was an extraordinary man and a faith-filled servant of the church. He had a special gift for touching others with both his humor and his sincere witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He will be greatly missed in this archdiocese and by all whom he served,” said Archbishop Flynn, archbishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis.
Ordained to priesthood May 26, 1962, in Rapid City, S.D., Welsh was ordained a bishop Dec. 14, 1978. He served as bishop of the Diocese of Spokane, Wash., from 1978-1990, and was appointed auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis on Nov. 5, 1991. He served as auxiliary bishop for both Archbishop John R. Roach, who retired in 1995 and for Archbishop Flynn.
Welsh took a roll as vicar for Hispanic affairs of the archdiocese and as Episcopal vicar for the Western Vicariate of the archdiocese. In addition, Welsh weekly visited various Catholic Charities sites within the archdiocese. Welsh was also chairman of the Region 8 Committee for the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCB) and a member of both the Committee on Bisho9ps’ Life and Ministry and the Administrative Committee of the NCCB.
Born Feb. 1, 1935 in Winton, Welsh attended the University of Wyoming, St. John’s University, Collegeville, Minn., and St. John’s Seminary, Collegeville. He was ordained for the Diocese of Rapid City and served as associate pastor of the Church of St. Paul, Belle Fourche, S.D., and the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Rapid City. He also served as chancellor for the Diocese of Rapid City from 1973-1978. During the 1980s, Welsh also served as Episcopal moderator for both the Worldwide Marriage Encounter program and the National TEC (Teens Encounter Christ) program.
Welsh was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence H. Welsh; infant sister, Laura Mae Welsh; nephew, Christain Welsh; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Fornengo and Mrs. And Mrs. William Welsh.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Theresa Welsh, sister Beverly A. Graham, brother Ronald J. Welsh, brother-in-law Raymond Graham, nephew Larry R. Graham, aunts Lillian Welsh, Mary Ellen Morris, Mirch Welsh, Elizabeth Fornengo and Barbara Fornengo, and several cousins, all of Rock Springs; and niece Mary Welsh of Casper.
