Son of Noah and Jerusha (Dunham) Norton. (Noah served in Revolutionary War and died in Mass.) He married Mary "Polly" Norton.
Rev. Lemuel Norton, was ordained in 1817, in the Calvinist Baptist, but after ten years preaching, changed his views to more liberal theology and united with the Freewill Baptist in 1828, and organized a church at Mt. Desert. In 1840, he became pastor of the Belmont Church, and served in the ministry faithfully until his death from cancer of the stomach, at the home of his daughter, Mary. He requested to be "buried on Mt. Desert Island," where he had organized the first Freewill Baptist church in Hancock County, ME.
