|Birth: ||Mar. 7, 1839|
|Death: ||Aug. 11, 1865|
Died aged 26 years.
His parents were Asa COBURN and *Fidella (Drew) COBURN.
(*Fidella was sometimes spelled "Phidella."
Fidelia died when Greenleaf was eight years old. He early showed a fondness for books. At fourteen he went to Boston, where he was employed till he was seventeen. He was converted in 1857, at Gray, ME, under the labors of Rev. W. T. Smith. He was baptized at once uniting with the church (Freewill Bapt) at Gray. In the spring of 1858, he returned to Boston for another year. Early in 1859, he went to Lewiston and entered Bates College, enjoying the love and esteem of his instructors, graduated from his preparatory course in July 1862. He then entered the Theological School at New Hampton (NH) and after three years graduated being ordained there July 17, 1865. A fortnight later he came to Lewiston and arranged with President Cheney to enter the Junior Class of the College.[Bates]. But in two weeks he was dead from a fever.
An incident will reveal the young man's principles: A gentleman offered to start him in busines in Boston, and give him half the profits. "No," young Coburn replied. "I must get an education and enter upon a higher calling." President Oren B. Cheney, Bates College, preached his funeral sermon. The only relative he left was an aged father."
