Clark County
Washington, USA

Since Clark County police dog Kane was killed in a chase Saturday, people have been peppering the county sheriff's office with inquiries about making a donation.

Kane was stabbed Saturday during a search for two people who fled from a stolen police car. He was taken to an animal hospital and later pronounced dead.

Department spokesman Sgt. Scott Schanaker said the department was "greatly appreciative" of the response and would use donations to support the K-9 unit, including training a new police dog.

"There's an incredible amount of training and associated expense with them," he said.

Kane had extra training because he was assigned to work with the SWAT team, Schanaker said.

Checks should be made out to the Clark County Sheriff's Office, with "K-9" written in the check memo line. They can be dropped off at a department precinct or mailed to Clark County Sheriff's Office, P.O. Box 410, Vancouver, WA, 98666.

Meanwhile, the department is planning a memorial service for Kane, but details weren't available early Monday. Schanaker said he hoped to have more information by the end of the day, but there's a lot of preparation to be done.

"It's like an officer being killed," Schanaker said. "There's such a tremendous turnout. They have to do a lot of planning."

Two people were arrested in connection with the incident. Keegan H. Graves, 31, of La Center, is accused of stabbing the dog. He's been arrested on suspicion of harming a police dog, auto theft and attempting to elude a police officer.

Natasa M. Cresap, 22, of Yacolt, was held on a corrections warrant [Elliot Njus, The Oregonian]

I hope that there will be some justice for you Kane. The monster who ended your life should be in prison for a very long time. You were a great dog who served people well. Be free now. Nobody can ever hurt you again.
