TONKAWA -On Feb. 26, 2005, Howard E. "Gene" Steers went to be with his Lord and Savior. He was 70.
The funeral will be Wednesday , March 2, at 11 a.m. in First Baptist Church in Tonkawa with the Rev. Dr. Richard Thomasson officiating. Internment will be in the Tonkawa IOOF Cemetery under the direction of Anderson Funeral Home.
Gene was born May 20, 1934, in Bartlesville to Frankie and Emaline Aytes Steers. Gene and his family moved to Blackwell in 1938, graduating from school in 1955.
He started working for Safeway Stores Inc. in Blackwell in June 1954. He was drafted into the Army in 1956, serving with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C. After being discharged in 1958, he attended NOJC (NOC), graduating in 1961 with an associate degree in business. Gene worked for Safeway until 1974 in several different locations.
He owned and operated the Stoppe and Shop, later purchasing the Safeway Store when it closed. He was also the Mistletoe Express agent in Tonkawa for several years and later taking the agency in Blackwell. After the grocery business Gene went to work for Williams Machine in 1978 until receiving a medical retirement.
His parents, brother, several uncles, aunts and nieces preceded him in death.
