CLAY AYTES DIES, RITES THURSDAY

Athens Native Had Owned Several Drugstores In the Area


Clay Aytes Sr. of 17 Eaton Circle, Fort Oglethorpe died Monday morning in a hospital here.


Mr. Aytes had been a registered pharmacist more than 50 years and had owned and operated several drugstores in this area. He was a former Fort Oglethorpe city commissioner and a veteran of World War I.


A native of Athens, Tenn., Mr. Aytes had lived in the Chattanooga and Fort Oglethorpe area for the past 40 years. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee Medical Unit in Memphis and was a member of both the Tennessee and Georgia Pharmaceutical associations.


Mr. Aytes was a member of the Candler United Methodist Church and the Loudon, Tenn., Masonic Lodge.


He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Alverson Aytes; one daughter, Mrs. Frank A. Emerick of Deland, Fla.; a son, Clay E. Aytes Jr. of Chattanooga; one granddaughter, Diann E. Martin of Deland, one grandson, Clay E. Aytes III of Chattanooga; and two great-grandsons, Casey E. Aytes and Tracey E. Aytes, both of Chattanooga.


Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the National Cemetery with Dr. J. Fred Johnson officiating.


The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Cancer Society. The body is at the Lane Funeral Home.

Clay Aytes, Sr., the owner and operator of several area drug stores, died Monday morning in a local hospital.


He was a resident of Ft. Oglethorpe, Ga., and was a native of Athens, Tenn.


A registered pharmacist for more than 50 years, he was a member of both Tennessee and Georgia Pharmaceutical Associations. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee Medical Unit at Memphis.


Mr. Aytes was a former city commissioner of Fort Oglethorpe and a veteran of World War I. He was a member of Candler United Methodist Church and the Loudon, Tenn., Masonic Lodge.


Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Alverson Aytes; a daughter, Mrs. Frank A. Emerick, Deland, Fla.; a son Clay E. Aytes, Jr., of Chattanooga; two grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.


Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in the National Cemetery with Dr. J. Fred Johnson officiating.


The family requests that all contributions be made to the American Cancer Society. The body is at the Lane Funeral Home, Inc.
