Services for Carl Lester Baker, 65, Lawrence, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Rumsey Funeral Home with the Rev. David Aanonson officiating. Burial will be in Leavenworth National Cemetery with military honors by the Fort Leavenworth Honor Guard.
Mr. Baker died Wednesday at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
He was born Sept. 27, 1925, in Lawrence. He attended Lawrence High School and Oread High School. He later attended Kansas University, where he was a track and field athlete, Santa Maria (Calif.) Junior College and Southwestern University in Texas. He received a bachelor's degree in law enforcement.
Mr. Baker was a law enforcement officer in several Texas cities and in Jefferson County. He also had worked for the Counter Intelligence Corp. in Washington, D.C., and worked on Apollo rockets at the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at one time.
He was a member of the Barber Shop Singers Society, Trinity Lutheran Church, and a former member of the Eagles, Elks, Masonic Lodge, and the Fraternal Order of Chiefs of Police, all in Lawrence. He delivered flowers for Dillon Stores. He enjoyed repairing mopeds and motorcyles, as well as reading and oil painting.
Mr. Baker served in the U.S. Marines from 1943 to 1946, and in the U.S. Army until 1950.
He married Joan Emma Barton on Jan. 27, 1952, in Whittier, Calif. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Charles, Lawrence; a daughter, Debra Ann Baker Wilkerson, Lawrence; two sisters, Anna Belle Black, Oskaloosa, and Dorothy Mendanhall, Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.
