From Military Records of Crawford Co Oh, this record: Sheppard, Thomas J e at Zanesville, Muskingum Co Aug 11 1862 Co E 97th OVI. Promoted to 1st Sgt cap at Kennesaw Mt Ga June 14, 1864, while prisoner at Andersonville he visited the sick and dying and holding funeral services for the dead and widely known and honored as "the Andersonville chaplain: dis at Camp Chase June 17 1865, member Keller Post GAR

» Thomas J. Sheppard, a minister, was captured in Georgia and held at Atlanta, Andersonville, Millen Balackshear, and Savannah for 10 months and 10 days. He spent his time visiting the sick and dying. He became widely known as the "Andersonville Chaplain."
