Birth: Sep. 14, 1735
Death: Apr. 5, 1811

Robert Raikes was the owner and printer of the weekly "Gloucester Journal". He used to visit the two prisons in Gloucester. He could see that young children were neglected and illtreated and wanted to stop them starting a life of crime. He and Thomas Stock a young rector started a Sunday School in his Parish. This was so successful that the idea spread out across England. The crime rate dropped throughout the county. Raikes was honoured by the Royal Family and has a statue on the Embankment in London.
