Former Clarkston Area Fire Chief, Donald Singer, died Thursday, January 5th, in Bozeman, Montana after a lengthy illness. He was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania in 1927 and served in the United States Army Air Corp at Narssarssuaq, Greenland. After the war he married Georgia Connors in Mobile, Alabama. For a few years they lived in Johnstown, then moved to Lancaster, California in 1952, working first for Lancaster Radio, then North American Aviation in Palmdale and Los Angeles.

He was recruited by the newly-formed National Aeronautics and Space Administration as an aviation telemetry technician for its expanding high-speed flight research operations.

His career with NASA spanned some of aviation's most productive and exciting programs including the X-15 Rocket plane, the triple-sonic B70 and SR71/YF12 aircraft, the entire lifting-body series, and the Space Shuttle captive and free-flight testing.

After his retirement from NASA in 1978 Singer moved to Bozeman, Montana. Later he took up residence on 20 acres along the headwaters of the Missouri river, indulging in his lifelong passion for hunting, fishing, and outdoor living. In 1991 he married Ellen Palmer, helped organize the Clarkston Fire Service Area volunteers and served several years as Chief of their small department.

He is survived by both Georgia and Ellen, his children from his first marriage, Evelyn Ferber of Rosamond, California; Donald, Jr., of Grand Canyon, Arizona; David, Michael, and Sandra, all of Lancaster; his sister, Eva McFeaters, and brothers Robert and Melvyn; 5 grandchildren, one great granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews. A private memorial service for the family is planned.
A portion of his ashes were scattered on his property on Crystal Mountain Rd, Three Forks, Gallatin County, Montana. In June of 2008 the remainder of his ashes were buried in the family burial plot next to his parents and grandmother in Johnstown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania.
