Henry T. Webber, 76, of Lorain, passed away Sunday, August 18, 2013 at University Hospital, Cleveland, following a brief illness. Born December 20, 1936 in Lorain, he was a life long resident of the city.
Henry graduated from Lorain High School in 1955, having lettered in track and tennis and breaking one of the schools track records. On his first day at Kent State University, he met and fell in love with Peggy Martin with their courtship continuing through college. After graduating from Kent State with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1959, he married Peggy in 1960. While at Kent State he was member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity. He continued on to Case Western Reserve School of Law, graduating with a Juris Doctorate in 1962. While there, he was a member of the Delta Theta Phi law fraternity.
Through out his legal career, Henry was an attorney in private practice and had served as Lorain City Prosecutor and Lorain County Domestic Relations/Juvenile Judge. During his 18 years as judge, Henry was very concerned with helping troubled youth and was instrumental in bringing many new programs into the juvenile court. He started two group homes for troubled youth. He also created the Youth Development Center that won a national award for an outstanding educational program. He also created a substance abuse program for youth in the court. He initiated a Restitution Program, Intensive Probation and Friends Program. While judge, he renovated the juvenile detention home earning it accreditation from the state. He was an instructor for the Ohio Judicial College, the Ohio Academy of Trial Lawyers, Ohio Legal Institute and Ohio Bar Association. While serving as president of the State Child Support Committee, he lobbied for and obtained unified child support guidelines for the state. He was a contributing author to the Banks Baldwin book on Domestic Relations Law.
He was past president of the Ohio Bureau of Support Enforcement Association, past president of the Lorain County Children Services Board, past president of the Ohio Association of Juvenile and Family Court Judges. He served on the Ohio Supreme Court Commission on Child Support Enforcement, board member and trustee of the Foundation of National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, past chairman of Board of Commissioners on Grievances and Discipline of the Ohio Supreme Court.
Henry, known by his friends as Hank, had a passion for power boating and sailing. He was a member the Vermilion Boat Club serving as Commodore in 1980 and recently serving on the 100th anniversary committee this year. He was also past president of District 7 Blue Gavel. He served as Commodore of the Inter Lake Yachting Association in 1991, and currently served as chairman of the Admiralty Committee and as Fleet Chaplain. He was a member of the American Legion Post 30 of Lorain and currently serving as judge advocate for both the American Legion and the Sons of the American Legion. He was an honorary life member of the Italian American Veterans Post 1 and a member Lake Erie Moose Lodge 552.
To Henry, his family was most important to him. He enjoyed spending time with his two daughters and their families. Besides boating, other activities he enjoyed through out his life were playing ice hockey, tennis, racquet ball, traveling and building model planes. Henry was also an avid Cleveland Browns fan and a season ticket holder for many years.
Surviving is his loving wife of 53 years, Margaret "Peggy" (nee Martin); his daughters, Barbara A. Webber and her husband Mickey Silecky and Linda A. Webber and her husband Chris Moore; and his cherished grandchildren, Nicholas, Victor and Alexander Silecky and Thomas and Maggie Moore.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry P. in 1991 and Hazel (nee Nestor) Webber in 1975.
The family will receive friends Friday, August 23, 2013 from 3:30 to 8:30 P.M. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Copper Foster Park Road, Amherst. A prayer will be said at 7 P.M. by the Inter Lake Yachting Association. Funeral services will be Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 9:15 A.M. in the funeral center, followed by Mass at 10 A.M. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 1305 E. Erie Ave., Lorain. Rev. Richard E. Hudak, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
