1st Lieutenant Thiel was the pilot of a U.S. Air Force B-29 Superfortress. He perished when the bomber experienced an engine fire on takeoff from MacDill Air Force Base and crashed into the muddy marsh of Tampa Bay, Florida while attempting an emergency landing. Four other crew were also killed, and four survived. Ironically, this crew was dispatched to help locate another downed B-29 off the coast of Bermuda.
