Rev Philip Francis Barrett OSA

Philip Francis Barrett was born on Tuesday, March 12, 1918, in Philadelphia PA, to Patrick and Anna (née Ancin) Barrett. He was baptized on March 24, 1918, at Saint Francis de Sales Church, in Philadelphia. Raised in Larksville PA, he attended Saint Vincent's School in Plymouth PA. His first contact with the Augustinians was at Augustinian Academy in Staten Island NY, where he was a postulant during the academic year 1935-36. Following his high school education, he worked at Bendex Aviation Corporation.

With the outbreak of World War II, Phil entered the military in 1942, serving in the US Navy until 1945 in Naval Intelligence. Taking advantage of the GI Bill of Rights, he enrolled in Villanova College in one of the first large postwar classes, and graduated with an AB degree in economics in 1949. For a brief time, he was an accounting instructor at King's College in Wiles Barre PA.

In September of 1949, Phil was received into the Augustinian Novitiate in New Hamburg NY, where he professed simple vows on September 10, 1950 and his solemn vows on May 14, 1953. Phil studied theology at Augustinian College in Washington DC and was ordained on Saturday, June 6, 1953, at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. He sang his first solemn mass on Sunday, June 14, 1953, at Saint Vincent's Church in Plymouth PA, his childhood parish. Following his ordination, he completed his graduate studies in accounting and finance at Catholic University of America in Washington DC, from which he received a MS degree in 1954.

Father Phils' first assignment was to the faculty of Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington DC, in September of 1954. Five years later, he was appointed the second rector of that school. In 1961, he was assigned to Merrimack College in North Andover MA, as dean of men and professor of theology. He, along with Rev George Burnell OSA, began preparation with the Archdiocese of Boston for opening a preparatory school in the Merrimack Valley. The school, Austin Preparatory school in Merrimack Valley, was to open its doors in the fall of 1963 with Fr Barrett as rector. However, in September of 1962 Father Phil was assigned to Villanova University in Villanova PA, as dean of the College of Commerce and Finance. For the next 14 years he worked to improve the College of Commerce and Finance, eventually achieving accreditation by the American Academy of Collegiate Schools of Business. He resigned his post at Villanova in 1976 and in recognition of his efforts there, he was granted him an honorary doctorate of Humanities in 1977.

From then until his retirement in 1993, Father Phil served in many parishes within the Province. He was Assistant Pastor of Saint Mary's in Wilkes-Barre PA, Saint Thomas of Villanova in Rosemont PA and Saint Genevieve Parish in Flourtown PA; Administrator of the Church of the Epiphany in Sayre PA; and Pastor of Saint Joseph's Church in Greenwich NY. In 1972, when a disastrous flood struck Wilkes-Barre PA as a result of Hurricane Agnes, Father Phil organized and served as director of Augustinian Flood Relief. His parents' house was converted into a temporary rectory for two parishes that were destroyed. He personally delivered emergency items and ministered to the spiritual needs of those affected by the flood.

Father Phil had a great love for the outdoors and with brother Augustinians spent many vacations camping and fishing. His personality and enthusiasm for Villanova attracted the support of many influential business men. In 1993, as his health began to deteriorate due to heart condition, Phil was assigned to Saint Thomas Monastery on the campus of the university.

Father Phil died at Bryn Mawr Hospital on Sunday, January 30, 1994, in Bryn Mawr PA, at the age of 75.

In addition to his parents, Father Phil was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Barrett, who was killed in action during WWII. He is survived by his sisters, Eileen Lawrence of Bloomsburg PA and Anne Armstrong of Dover NJ.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Thursday, February 3, 1994, at Saint Thomas of Villanova Church, in Villanova. The celebrant was Fr John Hagen OSA, the prior provincial. Before the prayers of commendation, brief remarks were delivered by the dean of Commerce and Finance, Alvin A Clay. Interment followed on Friday, February 4, 1994, in the family plot at Saint Stephen's Cemetery, in Lehman Township PA.
