Pilot of U.S. Army Air Corps B-17G Flying Fortress #43-39136. Killed when the bomber, removed of it's armament and being used as a passenger transport, collided with 1,200-foot Mt. Tom, just north of Holyoke, Massachusetts, while on approach for a landing to nearby Westover Army Airfield. The flight was transporting G.I.'s from Gander, Newfoundland, who were returning stateside from service overseas. All 25 aboard perished. The accident was witnessed by many of the 4,000 people in attendance of festivities at a county park at the base of the mountain.
