Richard Earl Alford, 62, of Cumberland MD, died on Friday, May 15, 2009 at WMHS-Memorial Campus.

Born June 16, 1946, in Milledgeville,GA, he was the son of the late Mack Furman Alford,Sr. and Dorothy (Lanier) Alford. He was also preceded in death by an older brother, Mack F. Alford,Jr.

Richard was a 1964 graduate of Baldwin High School, Milledgeville,GA. He received his Associate's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Southern Technical Institute, Marietta,GA in 1967 and his Batchelor's Degree in Industrial Management from Georgia Southern University, Statesboro,GA in 1969 where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. Richard was a member of the Georgia Army National Guard from 1968 to 1974.

In October of 1979, Richard was chosen to engineer the start-up and manage a production facility for Biederlack's first American blanket manafacturing facility. Richard chose Cumberland over Eastern shore because of the ready and able workforce and the beauty of Western Maryland. He later became President of Biederlack of America Corporation and retired in 2004. Prior, to his move to Cumberland, Richard was Plant Manager of the Standard-Coosa-Thatcher, Rossville,GA and Chattanooga, TN facilitie. He started his career with JP Stevens of Milledgeville,GA and later became plant engineer for Lawtex Industries in Macon,GA. Richard was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Textile Manufactures Institute.

Richard held office in many different organizations over the years, including Allegany Economic Development Company, Boy Scouts of America and the Maryland B.A.S.S. Federation. He was an avid woodworker, bass fisherman, gardener, boater and golfer.

Richard is survived by his wife of 27 years, Linda (Drummond) Alford; a daughter; Amy Waterman and husband Scot, Lexington, KY; a brother:William L. Alford and wife Roya, Warner Robins,GA; a sister Dorothy Ann Oermann and husband Tim, Orange Park,Fl; his mother-in-law and father-in-law; Margaret and James Drummond, Frostburg,MD; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins, brother-in-law, Mark Drummond and Harold Crawford and sister-in-law; Patricia Smith; and his special canine friend, Buddy.

Friends will be received at the Adam Family Funeral Home,P.A.,404 Decatur Street, Cumberland,MD, on Monday, May 18, 2009 from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M.

A memorial service will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday, May 18, 2009 P.M. with Pastor Floyd Bender officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Stallings, George Merling, William Wilson,Sr. Russell Alford, Will Alford, Tyler Alford, Jonathan Oermann, Caje Knight and David Knight.
