We found Margeaux one wintery night walking in the road, in the path of the snowy tire tracks. She was an adult cat, neutered and front declawed. We placed an ad in the paper for lost pet and received no phone calls. I'm thinking another irresponsible pet owner dumping their cat out in the country. I could be wrong, but I think not. That was early 2003.
What can I say about Margeaux. I often said she was a cat that only a parent could love. Even our vet said she was unadoptable. She was very noisy, meowed alot, had very coarse hair and didn't like to be brushed, she didn't like to be held and rarely would sit on your lap. She didn't get along with other cats and you would often find her alone. It is not that she would fight, she would just walk away when another cat came into her presence, however, when other cats were fighting, she seemed to get stressed, and would also stress out when sirens would go by.
We tried to warm up to her but she usually gave us the cold shoulder. When she did decide to grace us with her presence and sit in our laps, we took advantage of it by loving her with all of our attention.
One trait we always found interesting that didn't seem to go along with her personality. When we would have visitors, all of our other critters would run and hide, no where to be seen, but Margeaux would come out to greet them and seemed to want their attention, talking the whole time and rubbing against their legs. She didn't seem to be afraid of strangers. Anyone who came to our house after meeting Margeaux once, knew her, and knew her name. I think she must have gotten some kind of pleasure out of knowing she was "top cat" with visitors.
We do not know what her life was like before she found us but we do know that she had 9 good years with us and we handled her with great care. When she developed kidney problems and went down hill quite fast, we decided to forego any extraordinary methods to keep her alive.
Although she was a loner, we miss her terribly. The house is much quieter without her, and the silence is deafening.
Our vet was wrong.
She was adopted.
