Donald Eugene "Don" Matthews
Birth: Aug. 22, 1957
Gaston County
North Carolina, USA
Death: Jul. 29, 2008
Gaston County
North Carolina, USA

Donald bravely struggled with a very short battle of bile duct cancer. He joined his family in Heaven approximately 25 days from the time he was diagnosed with the disease. Donald was always a special member of our family and I believe will be the one holding the light for us to travel to join him in eternity one day.

He was born in Gastonia, the son of Coyt and Pat Matthews.

He graduated from Hunter Huss High in 1975 and Chowan College with a degree in graphic arts and attended Arkansas State University. He also served 8 years with the US Air Force, traveling the world with the Strategic Air Command and among his many duties, he proudly served as an honor guard.

He was previously employed by MDI in Hickory, North Carolina, Firestone Jewelry & Pawn, and recently opened M & M Custom Painting with his brother, Greg and nephew, Dustin.

Survivors include his three daughters, Angela Matthews of Asheville, Elizabeth Matthews of Paynesville, W. Va., and Sonya Taylor of Galveston, Texas; brothers, Greg Matthews and wife, Mary Ann Craig of Gastonia, Steve Matthews and wife, Renee of Gastonia; sisters, Kim Guthrie and husband, Bryan of Lincolnton, Debbie Shires and husband, Gene of Gastonia; nephews, Dustin Matthews and wife, Allison, Casey Guthrie, Matt Shires, Kyle Jones and Hunter Shires; nieces, Jessie Wallace and Amy Newman; great nieces and great nephews, Caylee and Chloe Matthews, Jakob and Aaron Ryley and Kadence Shires; special aunts and uncles, Susie Kester, Peggy Rampley, Maycie Matthews, Mike Jordan, Bill Jordan, Johnson Jordan and Danny Jordan.
Special friends include Sandra Martin, David Helms and Steve Hymel all of Hickory.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Bud and Agnes Jordan and paternal grandparents, Rosetta and Charlie Matthews and uncles, Bobby Matthews and Phillip Jordan.

A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Friday at Greene Funeral Service -West Chapel in Gastonia with Pastor Leo Kuykendall of Zion Baptist Church officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Interment is private.

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory that no one can steal.

If tears could build a stairway, and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to Heaven and bring you Home again.
