Myrtle Bunner Gates, 102, of Fairmont, East Grafton Road Community, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning (Jan. 25, 2009) at her home. Myrtle Hannah Bunner Gates was born on Bunner Ridge, the last surviving member of 14 children born to the late Wager H. and Hannah Caroline Vincent Bunner on Sept.15, 1906. She lived in Marion County her entire life. For 12 years Myrtle lived on Bunner Ridge attending Fairview School, a one room school, and the Methodist Church. After moving to Fairmont, she graduated from the 8th grade at Hickman Run School. She graduated from East Fairmont High School in 1924 and attended the Fairmont Normal School, now known as Fairmont State University, where she earned a teaching certificate. She later graduated from West Virginia Business College and spent several years working in different offices in Fairmont. In 1918, Mrs. Gates joined the United Brethren Church which became the Christ United Methodist Church and remained faithful to it all her life. The church later became united with Gateway United Methodist Church where she became a member. Through the years at Christ United Methodist Church, she served the church in numerous capacities, that included: teaching children, singing in the choir, even singing solos, directing the Junior Church, directing Sunday evening services and playing in the bell choir. Myrtle held many offices in the church and she was secretary to the Rev. Waters. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, helped with several "money making" efforts, often being a "delivery boy." For over 30 years she worked in the Rummage Room sales of the church. In 1949 Mrs. Gates started teaching the Adult Bible Class and taught it until the church was closed. In addition, she was secretary for the Homemakers Club, was faithful to the WTCU, volunteered at Fairmont General Hospital for over 20 years and she delivered Meals on Wheels. The four years of teaching weekday religious education classes were very dear to her. Myrtle loved to sew, read, work outside, study and indulge in almost any worthwhile occupation or project. Most precious to her was being a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Her home and her heart were always open to all. She was our reference point. Our lives will never be the same without her, but this world is a better place for her having lived. She is survived by four daughters and a sons-in-law, Dixie Dee Swiger of Fairmont, Karen Lynn Peters of Georgetown, S.C., Sharon Lee Gates of Kentwood, Mich., and Rebeccah Ann Saurborn and her husband, Terry of Fairmont; two daughters-in-law, Shirley Gates of Cranberry Township, Pa., and Maria Gates of Morgan Ridge; a nephew, Karol Kay Keener, who grew up in her home; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and good and dear friends. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gates was preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years, Jay Dee Gates, in 1985; her sons, Don Jay Gates, Barry "Bunny" Gates, twins, Frederick Gates and Jacob Gates who passed away at birth; a daughter, Jo Hannah Gerken; a granddaughter, Kimberly Hannah Payne; and sons-in-law, Harold Clifton Swiger, Carl William Peters and Harold Jolliff. Mrs. Gates' family would like to thank Hospice Care for their care and assistance to her family during her last days. Friends and family may call at the Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from 1-8 p.m. Wednesday. Visitation will continue from 10-11 a.m. on Thursday at the Gateway United Methodist Church. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the church with the Rev. Steven Meadows officiating. Interment services will follow at the Bunner Family Cemetery on Bunner Ridge. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gateway United Methodist Church, 301 Diamond St., Fairmont, WV 26554.
