from his obituary and family history (page 496) in the 1976 Hendricks County History:

Clarence L. Ratliff, 98, died June 15, 1995, at the Danville Rehabilitation Center. He was born May 10, 1897 (on the farm south of Lizton where he lived all his life) to Charles W. and Josephine Ann (Pigg) Ratliff. He went to the one room Hamilton School and later graduated from Lizton High School in 1917. While in high school, Clarence and his Boy Scout troop hiked to Monon, Indiana carrying their provisions in a covered wagon drawn by two horses. This trip also included a train trip to the Michigan City Prison (which they toured) and a boat ride on Lake Michigan. After high school, Clarence attended DePauw University where he played football. His college career was interupted when he enlisted in the U. S. Army in May, 1918 and was discharged in December, 1918. In 1993, 75 years after his military service, he was recognized as one of Union Township's last two surviving World War I veterans. After leaving the army, Clarence attended Central Normal College in Danville where he played basketball. While at Central Normal, he met May Truax who he married on Jan. 26, 1922 raising a family of six children. He was a rural mail carrier with the Lizton Post Office from March, 1924 until his retirement in November, 1959 and also farmed. He was a 50+ year member of the Pittsboro F&AM Masonic Lodge No. 622, the Lizton American Legion Post, and the Lizton United Methodist Church. As a child, he first attended Methodist services at the Montgomery Chapel south of Lizton and was a faithful member of the Lizton Methodist Church all his life.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Clara R. Zerbe of Broomfield, Colorado; Cordelia R. Collings of Lizton and Roberta R. Graham of Brownsburg; two sons, Donald Ratliff of Lizton and Charles E. Ratliff of Brownsburg; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Lee Allen Ratliff, who died in World War II.

Funeral services were conducted June 17 at the David A. Hall Mortuary in Pittsboro with the Rev. Carol Fritz officiating. Burial was in the Lizton K. of P. Cemetery.
