SPEARFISH - Funeral services for Orpha Collins, 85, Spearfish, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, February 16, 2002, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lead, S.D., with
Orpha was born April 17, 1916, at Duncombe, Iowa, the daughter of Harley R. and Ellen Mae (Meyers) Scovel.
As a small child she moved with her family to Dalzell, S.D., later moving to Elm Springs and then to New Underwood. She married Martin Collins on June 2, 1936, and they made their home in Grizzly Gulch and raised 11 children there.
Following Martin's death, Orpha moved to Lead in 1990, where she helped with the Collins House Bed and Breakfast. As her health began to fail she moved to the Serenity Corner in Spearfish, then to Sturgis for a time before entering the Kirkwood Manor in Deadwood and then to the Dorsett Health Care Facility. Her daughter Ellen was a constant caregiver for her.
Orpha loved baseball and was an avid Cubs fan.
She is survived by her children, James M. Collins, N.C., Carolyn (Charles) Davis, Lead, S.D., Gary H. Collins, Calif., Margaret (Cameron) Rinegar, Belle Fourche, S.D., Jack L. (Ramona) Collins, Spearfish, S.D., Allen F. (Dugan) Collins, Lead, S.D., Jean Collins, Colo., Joan Collins (Bob) Blinderman, Colo., Ellen (Les) Erikson, Lead, S.D., Kathleen (Brian) Veltman, Wash., and Jane (Duane) Stall, Sioux Falls, S.D.; a brother, Orville Scovel of Sturgis, S.D.; 19 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Martin, in 1989; a grandson, Shane Ommen in 1989; two sisters, Vada Hamling and Millie Hinzman; and three brothers, Merle, Glenn and Kenny Scoval.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Spearfish.
