Governor of North Carolina. Appointed in 1713, he became a controversial figure during his eight years in office. He was accused by some of being soft on pirates, especially Edward Teach ("Blackbeard"), whose bounty he was rumored to have shared in return for favors. Others praised Eden for fair and conscientious leadership. He was originally buried near the Salmon River in what is now Bertie County. In 1889 his grave was among those moved from family cemeteries along the eroding banks of the Chowan and Salmon Rivers to St. Paul's Episcopal Cemetery in Edenton, a town renamed for the former governor.
