Samuel is the son of Federic "Fed" Messer and Anna Hunter. He is a brother to Jackson, Elvira, Adrah, Conrad, Marietta, Susannah and Richard John.

Samuel grew up in Haywood county, NC but spent some time as an adult in Cocke county, TN. His military marker indicates his service to the Confederacy.

He married Sarah Elvira Cook and they have at least one son, Samuel, Jr. His wife reportedly died in 1925 in Sevier county, TN.

Samuel's marker indicates he was the 391st person admitted to the new asylum after it opened in 1883 - so his stay here was rather brief.

On his father's memorial page there is a photo of Samuel's father, Fed, and the cabin in which he lived.
