Was Mother of 2 Children Drowned Here in 1904
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Brumm, widow of Philip Brumm and mother of two children who were victims of one of Alton's most tragic drownings when eight persons lost their lives in August of 1904, died Friday (June 21, 1940) at 5:15 p.m., in a St. Louis hospital at the age of 80.

Mrs. Brumm made her home at 5614 Edsall (sic: Etzel) avenue where she lived with a son. Harry, and a daughter, Mrs. Grace Brumm Smith. She had been in failing health for some time due to the infirmities of age and two weeks ago had entered the hospital.
The surviving children, besides those with whom she lived, are Mrs. Nell Martin, Mrs. Lillian Mae McIntosh and Walter Brumm, all of St. Louis.
The body will be brought to Alton for Interment in Oakwood cemetery in the family plot beside the graves of the two children, victims of the drowning, and her husband, following rites Monday at 2 p.m., at Kron Chapel, 4911 Washington boulevard, St. Louis.
