Birth: May 7, 1826
Death: Mar. 16, 1904

Sarah Reed was born in Ross County, Ohio, May 7, 1826, and died at her home in Peoria County, Ill., March 16, 1904. She came to Peoria County with her parents when but four years old. The following year moved to Ogle County.

When the Blackhawk war broke out her father brought his family back to Peoria County where they built a fort on the bank of the creek, near where stands the old Union church, on the farm now owned by Harrison Reed. Many families were placed in the fort for safety with provisions and such while the men most of whom went to war. As soon as the trouble was over and peace was declared they moved back to Ogle County where she lived until her marriage with Lucas C. Hicks Sept. 3rd, 1846.

The deceased was 77 yrs, 10 months, and 9 days old. The funeral was largely attended by many friends and sympathizing neighbors conducted by Rev. Fisher, of Peoria, at the Union Congregational church north of Mossville. Mrs. Hicks united with the Universalist church near forty-nine years ago but was brought up a Methodist. The deceased was the mother of nine children, five of whom are living and attended the funeral; Lucius E., Samuel F., Ira J., Mark I. Hicks, Mrs. Sarah Adda Snyder, two having died in infancy. Emerson died at 39 years, Fanny died at the age of 18 years. Twenty three grand children and five great grand children - all of the grand children were here except two grand children, Mrs. Luella Bland and Mrs. Eunice Forest.

She was a loving, kind mother and a devoted, affectionate, wife; industrious, economical striving to economize to lay up for her children and grandchildren. Well may they call her blessed. She always welcomed all to her home with smiles of joy and nothing was too good for them, and she aleays wanted her children to do just right. She has been growing feeble for several years but still managed to keep around to look after the comforts of her home. A weak heart and dropsy finally ended her dear old life.

Biography and photo from her newspaper obituary, a digital copy of which was provided to me by fellow Find-A-Graver, John Melton on May 10, 2010.
