Roland Bernard "Rolly" Hemmah, 88, "went home to his heavenly father" on Nov. 24, 2012. He passed away of a massive heart attack while visiting friends and family in South Dakota.
Roland was born Jan. 29, 1924, at home in Marshall County, S.D., to Rudolph and Bertha (Loberg) Hemmah. Roland was the oldest of seven children; six brothers, Carmen, Dean, Merle, Raymond and Ralph; and one sister, Gail (LeRoy) Aadland.
Roland served his country during World War II, stationed in Iwo Jima during the occupational period. After he was discharged from the Army, Roland returned to South Dakota where he married Dorothy Rein in 1949. Roland and Dorothy had four children, Faye (Stewart) Schiele of Ronan, Allan Hemmah of Lakeside, Lorrie and Jim Werner of Lance Creek, Wyo., and Ann Holland of Helena.
Roland and Dorothy moved from South Dakota in 1960 to follow road construction, working for Schultz and Lindsey Construction Company among others over the years, moving from Kildeer, N.D., Hebron, N.D., Miles City, Fort Benton, Brady, Babb, Lakeside, Lake Five, Superior and Bonner, Mont., before settling in Somers in 1965.
Roland was an avid hunter and fisherman his entire life and enjoyed camping with his family. He was also one heck of a cribbage and pool player.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; his parents; and brothers, Carmen, Dean and Merle.
Roland leaves his four children, seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
A visitation will held from 1 to 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, at Buffalo Hill Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Buffalo Hill Funeral Home with interment at Glacier Memorial Gardens. A reception will follow at the Somers Fire Hall.
