Joe Henry Jilton passed away March 27, 2011 in Jonas Ridge, NC from complications due to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. He was born March 5, 1925 in Johnson City, TN.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Hildred Louise Griffin, whom he lost to heart failure in 2002.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Sandra Sue Jilton, Karen Jilton Neiman and Rebecca Jilton Warner, as well as three granddaughters, Vancie Dee Chesney, Stacy Louise Neiman and Chelsy Sara Neiman.
He was the son of the late James Robert Jilton and Essie Harrell Jilton of Johnson City, TM. Joe went into the army in June, 1943, where he trained as a paratrooper for the elite 82nd Airborne Division. He was wounded in Anzio, Italy in March, 1944. Joe spent almost a year in the hospital before returning stateside, where he became a PFC Parachute Rigger Instructor. He was then commissioned to raise funds for the war by traveling around the country to sell war bonds. His wartime medals include a Purple Heart; the prestigious Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar; Good Conduct Medal; American Campaign Medal; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, with one Bronze Service Star; Bronze Arrowhead Decoration; World War II Victory Medal; and Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII. He married Hildred Louise Griffin on April 9, 1948 in Johnson City and lived there until moving to Fort Pierce, Florida in 1970. Joe worked for the US Postal Service for 32 years, retiring in 1982. After retirement, he and Louise owned and operated Mary J's, a women's clothing store, and Nationwide Furniture, both in Fort Pierce, Florida. Joe was a member of Westside Baptist Church in Fort Pierce. He resided at Harbor Place assisted living in Port Saint Lucie, Florida before moving in 2006 to Avery County, North Carolina, where his daughter Rebecca resides. He was a resident of Jonas Ridge Assisted Living. Joe was cherished by his family and friends. He will be greatly missed and always loved.
Services: A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 1, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are under the direction of Haisley Funeral & Cremation Service.
