Last Will and Testament
John COLLIER

This is my last will and testament made the 3rd day of September, 1842. I wish my body to be buried decently withyout extravagance, and I appoint John BLAKENEY, Thomas ABERNETHY and Thomas [Roe] CURTIS my executors. My crops I wish sold for payment of my debts. should it not be sufficient, sell my stock for the same purpose. The balance of my estate I wish managed to the best advantage for the benefit of my wife and my children, giving off to each of my children as they may come of age or marry equal distribution of my estate, m wife sharing equally with my children.

Acknowledged and subscribed this 3rd day of September, A.D. 1842.

Will Book A., page 527
"At this date (July 1843) Caroline Jane McPhail, late Caroline J. Collier and widow of John Collier, deceased, filed in court her petition praying a decree for the sale of certain parcels of land instead of the negroes of said estate." She wanted to sell the west one-half of N.W. one-fourth of Section 2 in T16 R2E. The final entry on page 545 says that John BLAKENEY reports $101.40 left after the estate is settled and he still had unpaid bills August 1843.

Burial/Cemetery information provided by Ruth Allen, Marengo County Historian and former President of Marengo County Genealogical Society.
