Charles Henry Harris, 84, of Burlington, died at Great River Medical Center.

Born in Burlington, he was the son of Henry and Elizabeth Powell Harris. On Nov. 24, 1945, he married Mary Jane Abolt in Burlington.

He was a firefighter and paramedic for the city of Burlington for 30 years. He was the first EMT in Burlington. He was a glazer for Barngrover Glass and a mechanic for D&R Amusement Co. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 113th Calvary doing reconnaissance in the European Theater. He was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, boating and sports, especially football.

Survivors included his wife; four sons, Harold Harris of Glastonbury, Conn., David Harris of Burlington, John Harris of Vernon, Conn., and Tom Harris of Windsor, Conn.; one daughter, Carol Orth of Burlington; seven grandchildren; five great–grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Harris of New London and George Harris of Quickman, Ark.; nieces; and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

The funeral was held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with the Rev. William Wiegand as celebrant. Music was provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Military rites were conducted by Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. *** IN LOVING MEMORY OF ***

On Saturday; November 24, 1945, he married Mary Jane Abolt in Burlington. Mr. Harris was a firefighter and paramedic for the city of Burlington for 30 years. He mainly drove the firetruck and was the first EMT in Burlington. He was a glazer for Barngrover Glass and was also a mechanic for D&R Amusement Co. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II in the 113th Calvary doing reconnaissance in the European Theater. He was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed fishing, boating, and sports, especially football. He was a very giving and caring person. Charles Henry Harris, 84, of Burlington, passed away at 9:37 p.m. on Friday; January 26, 2007, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Those left to mourn his passing are his wife, Mary Jane; four sons, Harold (Kathleen) Harris of Glastonbury; Hartford County Connecticut. David C. Harris of Burlington, John Harris of Vernon; Tolland County, Connecticut and Tom (Michelle) Harris of Windsor; Hartford County, Connecticut. One daughter, Carol (Tony) Orth of Burlington; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert (Dana) Harris of New London; Henry County, Iowa and George (Mary) Harris of Quickman, Alaska and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. May they rest in peace. Visitation will begin after noon, Monday; January 29, 2007 at the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home where family will receive friends following a 6:00 p.m. Rosary Service until 8:00 p.m. The Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Harris will be 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday; January 30, 2007 at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. Father William R. Wiegand as Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Memorials have been established for SS. John and Paul Catholic Church and for Saint Jude's Children's Hospital.
