Thomas Clarey, pioneer, homesteader of Iowa, died Wednesday at his home, 508 Market street. He was 79 years of age and had been a resident of Sioux City for sixteen years. Mr. Clarey was born in County Limerick, Ireland, June 2, 1840, and at the age of 13 emigrated with his parents to America, settling at Binghamton, N. Y. Two years later his parents moved to Galena, Ill., where he lived until 1867. In 1864 he was married to Miss Mary McCarthy [McCarty]at Galena.
In 1867 Mr. Clarey came to Sioux City, traveling with an ox, team, and took a homestead in Plymouth county, fifteen miles up Perry Creek from Sioux City. He was engaged in farming there until 1903, when; he retired from his farm and went to Sioux City.
He is survived by his-widow and ten children, all of whom were at the bedside at the time of his death. He also had fourteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren,.
Funeral services will be tomorrow morning from the St. Boniface Church at 9:30.
