Birth: Sep. 18, 1894
Marion County
Iowa, USA
Death: Jan. 19, 1968
Mahaska County
Iowa, USA

Roy Fortner was the second husband of Maude Mae (Walker) Umphrey (1897-1970), marrying her soon after the death of her husband, Geoffrey Paul Umphrey (1897-1931). He and Maude were married circa 1932, probably in 1932. She had four children from her first marriage.

Roy had been married at least twice before Maude, and a family member has indicated she believes it was three times. He was married to Elsie I. Tucker on September 15, 1914 in Knoxville, Iowa. Later he was married to Winifred D. McIntire, and living in northern California around 1930. His marriage to Maude fared better.

Maude, her children, and first husband had been living in New London, Iowa, at the time of his death. She and Roy moved the family to Winterset, and later they moved again to Detroit, Michigan. Upon the death of Roy's "sister," Lillie, in 1963, he and Maude returned to the midwest and settled down in Knoxville, Iowa, where his family had previously lived.

Roy was said to be adopted by John Henry Fortner (1854-1927) and Sarah Armilda (McKinney) Fortner (1858-?). During his lifetime, speculating about how events had transpired surrounding his birth and adoption, he openly speculated that his mother was rather Lillian Irene (Fortner) Vance (1878-1963), and once again other family members have reported on her death bed she did acknowledge she was his mother rather than sister.
