Elmwood Biographical Sketches, 1874 The sharp, aquiline features of George W. Fisher, as he went industriously about the streets discharging a sheriff's functions though a series of years in Memphis, will long be remembered. he was an honest, and just, and generous old gentleman, as universally esteemed as he was widely known. He was born in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, March 21st, 1801, became a citizen of North Carolina in 1814, was married in 1823, removed to Cottonport, on the Tennessee river, and in 1834 became a citizen of Fayette county, which he twice represented in the Legislature. he became a citizen of Shelby county in 1848, and represented this and Fayette county in the State Senate, a position he filled till his death, November 20th, 1866.
