John and Harriet were the parents of nine children; Francis (Lydia Amity Welch), Almarion (Maria Wiggins), Luthera (Abram Allison Denny), Mary Edith (Benjamin Welch), Polly (Dan Davids), Charles (Lilly Skeesuck, Helen Mary Funk)and Helen McMillan), Charity (George E. Sears), Emily Jane (Albert Baxter Johnson) and Edward (Electa Mary Johnson).
Mr. DeGroat enlisted in the Civil War in New York on February 23, 1865. He was a private in Co F 48th New York Vols. John Morris DeGroat was a Native American Indian.
John died at the Post Hospital, Raleigh, North Carolina.
