John A. Lett was the oldest child in the family of Charles H. and Caroline (Johnson) Lett. He was born as the couple, along with Caroline's mother, were immigrating to the U.S. from Sweden. His birth occurred while at sea in the English Channel in July 1849. He would be the first of nine children, two of whom died in infancy or early chilhood. The Letts settled in Lockridge Township, Jefferson County, Iowa, by 1850, and the family name was "Anderson" when they were recorded on the federal census of that year. It remained that on several state censuses, as well, but by the census of 1860, they apparently chose the family name "Lett" and thus it remained from that point on. The family had also moved from Jefferson County to Des Moines County by 1854. They acquired a farm in Huron Township north of Burlington, and that was where John Lett grew to adulthood.
In 1871 he was married to Margaret A. "Maggie" Anderson (1847-1936), a native of Ohio, and for a few years they tried several locations, finally settling upon the area near Council Bluffs, Iowa, in the western part of the state. They had nine children. Four died young, and their names aren't known. The others were Charles "Clarence" Lett (1873-1954), Elsie Lett and Carrie A. Lett, twins born in 1877, Edson Garfield "Eddie" Lett (1878-1955), Harvey Anderson Lett (born 1883) and John B. Lett (1886-1963).
John and Maggie had a rocky relationship, often living apart for extended periods of time. They were, as their headstone attests, buried together after their deaths in the late 1930s.
(Note: Family information indicated John died in August 1939 rather than September.)
