Al Erickson was born in the area known as Puritan of Gogebic County, Michigan. His heritage was Scandinavian, including Swedish and Finnish.
His parents were Alfred T. Erickson (1894-1967) and Mabel Lavine "Tollie" (Olson) Erickson (1909-2002). Al was the oldest of their four children.
He married Kathleen Lucille Brumm in 1950 and was the father of three. The sons are Eric and Kirk Erickson, and the daughter of the family is Katrina Wilkinson.
In addition to a "regular" career, he and his brother, Clyde, worked on projects to revamp the internal combustion engine of motor vehicles.
After Al's wife, Kathleen, died in 1978 of complications related to a brain tumor, Al remarried to Marilyn Beth (McNutt) Feistner (1932-2002), whose first husband, the Rev. Harry H. Feistner, had died in 1970.

Alfred Clayton Erickson, 71, of Mediapolis, died at 1:51 p.m. Saturday, November 18, 2000, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born May 28, 1929, in Puritan, Michigan, he was the son of Alfred T. and Mabel Lavine Olson Erickson. On December 22, 1979, he married Marilyn Beth Feistner in Mediapolis.
Mr. Erickson was a marketing engineer at General Electric Company for 13 years. He retired in 1991.
He was affiliated with First United Methodist Church of Burlington. He was the inventor of more than 50 patents, including the electric car. He was a Korean War Air Force veteran with the rank of staff sergeant.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Eric Erickson of California and Kirk Erickson of McLean, Virginia; one daughter, Katrina Postlethwait of Aurora, Colorado; two stepdaughters, Debra Feistner of Des Moines and Cynthia Kuman of Grand Island, Nebraska; one stepson, Barry Feistner of Mediapolis; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his mother of Portland; two sisters, Elizabeth Shea and Dorothea Erickson, both of Portland; and one brother, Clyde Erickson of Sperry.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Kathleen Brumm, and his father.
Visitation will begin after noon today at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m.
The funeral for Mr. Erickson will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lunning Chapel, with the Reverend Dennis Tevis officiating.
A memorial has been established for First United Methodist Church's building fund.
