Louis Illmer Jr was born in St. Louis, Mo., July 19, 1877: son of Louis and Emmy (Haverland) Illmer; M.E., 1901. Cornell Univ.; post-grad., Roval Poly., Berlin, Germany; married in Corry, Pa., Aug. 7, 1906, Miss Lillian Winifred Rogers.

Children: Gustav II., Elizabeth Emily, Alexandra Winifred.

He was a construction engineer for the Brown Ferrier Co., Philadelphia; Gas and Oil Engine Expert and Inventor; Engine designer, De la Vergne Mach. Co., New York, 1902-05; in charge of gas engine design, Cornell Univ., 1905-00; gas and oil engine expert, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1900-09; chief engr, gas power dept.

Reading Iron Co.(developed Illmer gas engine), 1910-15; chief engr with Simon Lake, submarine expert, Milford, Conn, (perfected designs and patents for submarine oil engines), 1915-17; chief engr, American Whaley Engine Co., Boston (designs for cargo ship engines), 1917-38; same, with headquarters at Southward Foundry & Mach. Co. Works, Philadelphia, since 1918. Pres., lllmer Gas Engine Co., and recently developed the lllmer Impulsion Fuel Pump for direct-injection oil engines.

Took out twenty United States patents, principally connected with large gas and oil engine improvements, as indicated above; has done much research work in this field.

Wrote: "Modification of the Perfect Heat Engine Formula" (Franklin Inst.), 1904; "Two- vs. Four-Stroke Cycle Gas Engines" (The Engineer), 1907; "Oil Engine Vaporizer Proportions" (A.S.M.E.), 1915; "Bearing Design Constants" (Power), 1916; "Heat Flow Through Cylinder Walls" (S.A.E.). 1018; "Cross Current Predeterminations from Crank Effort Diagrams" (A.S.M.E.), 1917; "Engineering Features of the Whaley Marine Engine" (Rudder), Oct., 3919; "Experiences with Large tenter-Crank Shafts" (A.S.M.E.), 1920; "Porting and Charging of Two-Stroke Oil Engines" (A.S.M.E.), 1921: "Technical Aspects of the lllmer Impulsion Fuel Pump (privately published). Mem. A.S.M.E., Soc. of Automotive Engrs, A.A. A.S., Sigma Xi.
