Fritz passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 26th, 2011, at the Reidsville Veterinary Hospital. When he made his departure from this earth, Fritz was surrounded by his loving family who adored him.
When he was just a few months old, Fritz was rescued from the pound after being picked up by animal control officers. With time running out and destined to be put down, he escaped an early death by being eagerly adopted into a loving home. While his actual birthday wasn't July 4th, it was close enough that his new family and friends picked the date for his official records because he gained his "independence" from an early demise. Fritz was a classic example of why people should adopt their forever friend from animal pounds and shelters.
While he loved life as a homebody, Fritz enjoyed traveling from one end of North Carolina to the other. He was fortunate enough to feel the sand under his feet at Oak Island in the spring and summer, and breathe the cool air of Boone and Blowing Rock during the fall. The rest of the time he was contented just being at home with those he loved the most.
In all his years on earth, Fritz never met a stranger. No matter where he was or who he met, he was always the little charmer. Whether it was someone who visited the house or while making a trip near or far, he was always excited to meet new people and greet old friends too. He had a unique, one of a kind personality that caused everyone to love him. They truly broke the mould when Fritz came along.
His passing created an immeasurable void in the lives of those he left behind and he is greatly missed each and every day. The love and companionship he gave during his life was infinite. From the day he arrived at our home until his untimely passing from this life, he was full of nothing but affection and devotion for all. Each and every day he was here, he truly enriched all of our lives with his unique personality and presence. And for that we will be forever grateful.
To honor his life, the Danville (Virginia) Area Humane Society set up a fund called the "Fritz Childrey Fund For Older Friends" to help pay for medical issues in older shelter animals to make them more adoptable. Our family is humbled that the fund will help more animals to find their forever home, and that his name will live on while doing great work to help others.
The family would also like to sincerely thank the entire staff at Reidsville Veterinary Hospital for their devotion and compassion in treating Fritz over the years. We all appreciate your hard word and going the distance to show you care.
So long for now, Fritzel. We'll see you at the Rainbow Bridge.

"What if the brilliant twinkling stars
that bring the dark night sky to life
are windows looking out of heaven?
And at the very moment
when we're wishing on those stars,
hoping that the loved ones
we have lost are happy,
safe, and free....
maybe they are looking
at those same stars from the other side,
making the same wish for us...
sending us all their love."
Cremated, Ashes given to family or friend.
Specifically: Ashes remain in the care of the Childrey family.
