Baptist Leader, August 27, 1891
The sad news of the death of the Rev. F.M. Hawkins last night at his home two miles west of town reached us this morning. He had for many years battled with disease and used various kinds of medicines for relief, but without the desired effect.
For several years he had not been able to preach much and none since about a year ago at Friendship Church...a short talk.
He loved to preach the gospel of Christ, and few, if any, ministers could preach as logical, especially on the deep doctrines of the Bible. He, like Paul, would endure all things that he might win souls to Christ. He was very poorly compensated for his services, yet he preached Christ without murmuring. In his work for the Master he often went on foot many miles to his churches, generally supplying four at a time.
He gave as much as half his time, when able, to his farm, and thereby provided for those dependent on him for support. He has raised a large family; all married but one.
He was born in West Tennessee December 6, 1811, moved to Georgia in 1836, and settled soon after where he resided at his death.
His labors have ended and henceforth there is a crown for him at the right hand of God.
His remains will be entered tomorrow at Friendship Church where his membership has been since he moved to this section. The Masonic order will take charge of the body.
