Obituary of Oregon Grabill:
"Mrs. Oregon Grabill passed away Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Win Smalley. The immediate cause of her death being paralysis. "Grandma" as she was familiarly called, had lived to the ripe old age of 82 years, and had spent almost all of her life in Harrison Co. She leaves to mourn her departure 3 sons and 3 daughters: John, Sam, and Fred Grabill, Mrs. Belle Ragen, Mrs. Jesse Thompson and Mrs. Win Smalley and several grand and great-grand children. Funeral services were held Thursday at the Hobbs Chapel, internment in the Highland Cemetery beside her husband Andrew Grabill who passed away some years ago. Her sister, Mrs. Susan Shackelton of Eldorado Springs arrived and will be present for the service." --Source: Shackelton Family History, Bethany Gen. Society, Bethany, MO.

"About my grandmother & great-grandmother, both were Grabills. So we called Grandmother, "Grandmother on the Prairie" and great-grandmother (Sallie S. Woodward Grabill) was in the timber. "Grandmother on the Prairie" was Oregon (Smith) Grabill, born in St. Joseph, MO. Her parents were on their way to the state of Oregon. Because of high water, presumably the Missouri River, their journey was delayed and their daughter, Oregon, was born. The journey was not completed and the family settled in Northwest Missouri. Grandmother was a good doctor for our many little ailments. I first knew about N.R. Tablets from her, I still take them when needed. I don't remember ever going to a doctor or having one when I was young. If we stepped on a nail, fat meat was bandaged on it and soaked in salts water hot. I did go to a dentist to have teeth pulled, I was not very cooperative. "Grandmother on the Prairie" smoked a corncob pipe. I remember her waking at night and she would be rocking in her chair and smoking her pipe. I don't remember my Grandpa, (Jacob) Andrew Grabill. He was a minister."--Exceprt from "I Remember" by Bess White. Contributed by Bess's granddaughter Gay Vanderlinden.
