Walter F. Abernathy, 56, died at his home, 231 East Pennsylvania Avenue, at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday. Death was due to a heart attack. He was visiting with friends when he suddenly slumped over. The city emergency ambulance was called, and an attempt made to administer oxygen, but a doctor pronounced him dead within minutes of the attack. Abernathy had suffered a heart attack about two months ago, and had only recently returned home from the hospital. He had been at his office earlier in the day Wednesday. With him when he died were his wife and son and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Evans. Evans has been associated with Abernathy in the insurance business for the past year.
Abernathy was born Aug. 4, 1898 in Blakesburg. His parents were M.H. and Louisa Abernathy. He attended Ottumwa High School with the class of 1917, and the State University of Iowa. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. At the university he served in the student Army Corps, during World War I. He was graduated in 1922. He came to Ottumwa in 1925, and was in the automobile business. He operated a Nash Agency and later a Buick and Cadillac Agency here. He went into the insurance business here in 1940, operating a general insurance agency. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and a vestryman of the church. He had been a director of the Chamber of Commerce. He belonged to the Ottumwa Country Club and the Elks Lodge. During World War II he was active in organizing a chapter of the Navy league in Ottumwa and served as president of the chapter.
Wife, Son Survive
He served as Wapello County Probation Officer during and following World War II. He and Miss Blossom Harper were married June 9, 1930. She survives. They have a son Fritz, 14. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Achsa A. Stutz of Blakesburg. One sister preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church. The Rev. Frank Shaffer, rector of Trinity Church will be in charge. Burial will be in Blakesburg Cemetery. The body will be at the Jay Funeral Home until time for services. members of the family request that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to memorial funds of the Ottumwa Hospital, or the American Home Finding Association.
