MCCOMB, Miss. — The clouds parted briefly and the sun came out for a few minutes today to mark the passing of Carol Baer. Carol was with her two daughters, Barbara and Janet, her son-in-law, Dr. Carl R. (Kel) Feind, and her four Shelties, Becca, Annie Pie, Samantha, and Dancer.
Carol was a retired public schoolteacher, world traveler and lifelong Buddhist. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer while living in Bloomington, IN, four years ago. After surgery and chemo, she decided enough was enough and enrolled in the Bloomington Hospice Program nearly two years ago. Last year, she made her final trip to move to McComb to live out her life with Barbara and Kel. She had a great last year in Mississippi! She spent many evenings at Ruby Tuesday, where she was fond of leaving exorbitant tips to enthusiastic young waiters. She enjoyed going to Fernwood Country Club and swimming in the pool last summer. She loved watching the Lakers win the NBA championship last year and was GREATLY excited to vote for and see the election of Barack Obama!
Carol, or the Dalai Mama, as she was fondly known by those closest to her, spent her last burst of energy spending time at the hospital's physical therapy and cardiac rehab centers with her newest friend, LuBertha Nathaniel. The two of them would work out together, come back to the house, have a glass of lemonade, feed the dogs, then look for a basketball game to watch on TV. She will be missed very, very much.
