On December 22, 1942 S/Sgt Stewart was a gunner on A-20B #41-3004, assigned to the 12th Air Force, 47th Bombardment Group, 85th Bombardment Squadron. They were ferrying the plane from St Eval airbase in England to Gibraltar, accompanied by a group of P-38 fighters. Over the Bay of Biscay they encountered four German JU-88s and were shot down in the ensuing air battle. The Army officially declared the crew dead in 1943.

Because his body was not recovered, Stewart is also memorialized on the Wall of the Missing at the North Africa American Cemetery in Carthage Tunisia. He received the Purple Heart.
