Auto Racing Figure. Born in Portland, Oregon, he was a colorful character who started flagging local automobile races in 1946 and became assistant starter at Indianapolis in 1958. Known for his bodybuilder's physique, his crisp black-and-white outfits and his flourishes with his colored flags, he was made the Indianapolis 500 Chief Race Stater in 1962. Vidan appeared on many television shows, on talk radio and was featured in the racing movie "Winning" (1969). After seventeen years at the 500, he reired in 1979, returned to Portland, Oregon, where he lived until his death at age 69. In 2012, he was posthumously inducted into the Auto Racing Hall of Fame. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
