Thomas Joseph Margle was born at New Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He joined the United States Air Force, and rose to the rank of Captain.
During the Vietnam War, he was assigned to the U.S. Air Force's 14th Air Commando Squadron, 14th Air Commando Wing, 7th Air Force at Phan Rang Air Base, South Vietnam.
On February 14, 1968, U.S. Air Force AC-47D "Spooky" gunship, Serial Number 43-49859, departed Phan Rang Air Base on a close air support mission. The aircraft was shot down just 5 miles south of the air base, killing all eight of the aircrew members on board.
