2001 - Betty Thomas Stewart, 82, of Austin, Arkansas, the first woman officer at Worthen Bank & Trust Co., died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001 of a heart attack. Born near Tipton, Mo., she began worked at Worthen in 1943 and became an officer in 1964. She was named Woman of the Year in Banking from the downtown Business & Professional Women's Club and Arkansas Woman of the Year by a readership poll of the Arkansas Democrat.
She served as state chairman of the National Association of Bank Women, was a member of the Altrusa Club of Little Rock, the Departmental Club and a board member of the Salvation Army Auxiliary and YWCA. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Perry Stewart Sr. Survivors include her son, Perry Stewart Jr. of Fort Worth, Texas; sisters, Helen T. Leigh of Little Rock, Eileen Schmidt of Milwaukee, Theada Bittner of Iowa, Louise Lomax of California; aunt, Hazel Lyons of Lonoke; niece, Nancy Stewart of Stuttgart; and nephews, David Stewart of Stuttgart; and nephews, David Stewart of Hot Springs and Jerry Brown of Sherwood.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 5, in the Griffin Leggett-Rest Hills chapel. Entombment was at Rest Hills Memorial Park. The family requests that memorials be made to Sylvania Presbyterian Church in Ward, Ark., First Christian Church in Little Rock or the Arlene Cherry Library in Cabot.; nlrt1/11/2001
