Served in the U.S. Marines as an Assault Amphibious Vehicle Crewman with the 3rd AMTRAC batallion. He was awarded the Silver Star, the Purple Heart, and the Congressional Medal of Honor. He died from multiple fragmentation wounds as a result of stepping on a land mine while he and his Commanding Officer were trying to get others out of a mine field. His name is listed on panel 26E, line 080 of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.
Carl was the oldest of five children. He was baptized at Zion Reformed Church in Nanticoke. He graduated from Dover High School in Dover, Morris County, New Jersey. Family links: Parents: Carl Rilk (1925 - 1979)
