Gran parish records state that she was born 28 July 1847 on the Hougtvedeiet farm, near Gran, Norway. She was baptized at one of the famous Sister Churches at Gran. On the 1865 census she was listed on the Knarud farm, living with her mother's parents. There a young Stephen Hansen Furua also worked.
Bertha came to America with a family group that included her Aunt Kjersti Larsdtr (Mrs. Erick Hanson Haugtvedt) and their children. Erick was Stephen Hansen's half brother. The group left Norway on 27 April 1871 and took the ship Anna Delius from Oslo to America, arriving at Quebec on June 7, 1871. Shortly after arriving, on 18 November 1871 she married Stephen Hansen Furua at Preston, Fillmore County, MN. Her brother Jens Larson was the witness.
The couple left Fillmore County and moved to Tansem Township in Clay County, MN to begin their married life. They had 6 children. Two died very young. Sadly dtr Lise Marie drowned the day before she was to be married. They buried her in her wedding gown.
