Bidne Collapses on Street; Dies on Way to Lunch
Rites for Merchant and Banker Will Be Held Saturday - 67 Years of Age

Death came quickly to Knute G. Bidne Wednesday noon [March 29, 1939]. The man who came here as a cobbler in 1894, developed a pretentious retail shoe trade and rose to the presidency of the Farmers State Bank, collapsed on Pipestone Avenue as he was en route to his home for lunch at 12:50. Before anyone could reach his side he was gone.

Though a man of rugged build, Mr. Bidne has never been as strong since experiencing an automobile accident while motoring through Montana last August. While he was loath to concede the fact, it was apparent to those who were most closely associated with him. News of his death was a shock to all, for after having been confined to his home with the flu a few days last week he returned to duties at the store, seemed to throw off effects of that attack, and was apparently in normal health.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Norwegian Lutheran Church, where the Rev. B. T. Anderson, resident pastor, will conduct the rites. Interment will be made in Union Cemetery, Flandreau.

Knute G. Bidne was born May 16, 1872 at Vossestrande, Norway. At the age of 19 he came to the United States, and with his brother, Iver, settled at Garretson, S.D. Knute followed the cobbler's trade, while his brother carried on the tailoring trade. When they saw Flandreau developing into a city of promise, they chose to cast their fortunes with the people here. Iver Bidne later returned to their native land. "K.G." enlarged operations in 1896 by opening a retail shoe store.

On December 1, 1897, he was married in this city to Susanna Ringham, who survives him. Also surviving are seven children - Mrs. Robert Pollock, Minneapolis; Bernell Bidne, Albert Lea, MN; Miss Hazel Bidne, Minneapolis; Hjalmer [Selmer] and Leonard Bidne, Detroit, Michigan; Wilson Bidne, Albert Lea, Minnesota, and Silas Bidne, who has remained here and retained association with his father in business. One sister and two brothers who survive are Mrs. Louis Larson, Douglas, N.D.; Gullick Bidne, Baltic, S.D., and Iver Bidne, Vossestrande, Norway.

He devoted his energies almost exclusively to business, following a policy of straightforward methods, and practicing thrift which was best evidenced by his election to the presidency of the Farmers State Bank almost three years ago. His principle diversion was golf, which he followed with no small degree of enthusiasm during the summer months.

As a business man with a record of long association with this community, and that an honorable one, as one who retained vital interest in activities until he was suddenly taken away, as the head of a family which has maintained the respect of the community, Knute Bidne will be missed.
