Gertrude Sandvig Culhane died Nov. 21, 2008, in Bellevue, Neb.
Gertrude Gleora Sandvig was the oldest child of Oscar and Karen Carrie Bidne Sandvig. She was born on March 6, 1912, in Minnehaha County. As a child she lived in Baltic, where she attended grade school and high school. She graduated in 1933 from Augustana College in Sioux Falls. Gertrude was very active in choir and piano accompaniment both at school and church while she was growing up and at college. She began her teaching career in 1933 at the high school in Elkton, where she met her husband William John Bill Culhane.
Gertrude and Bill were married on May 27, 1944, in the Army Chapel at Camp Adair in Oregon. They were then stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., for several months until William was sent overseas during WWII on Dec. 6, 1944. Gertrude then returned to Baltic to stay with her parents while Williams was overseas as she was expecting the first of their five children.
Their first son was born on May 9, 1945, in Sioux Falls, the day after the war in Europe ended. William Sr., however, had to remain in Wiesbaden, Germany, to participate in the reconstruction efforts after the war. He did not return to the States until March of 1946. Their son was 10 months old before Bill was able to see him for the first time.
Bill went back tot work for Sacony Vacuum Oil Company after returning from the war. All of the Children attended grade school at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School where Gertrude was a substitute teacher and active in the Parent Teacher Association. For 39 years she was also a member of the choir at Our Lady of Lourdes Church.
At age 96, Gertrude was a resident of Mable Rose Estates in Bellevue, Neb. Gertrude was an avid sports fan, a master at Jeopardy and crossword puzzles and loved to listen to music and books on tape.
Gertrude was preceded in death by husband, William J. Culhane.
She is survived by sons: Bill (Connie) Culhane, Tom (Marianne) Culhane, Mike (Kathleen) Culhane, all of Omaha; daughters: Karen (Dave) Matteucci of Kenosha, Wis.; Mary (Ron) Filopowicz of Lees Summit, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Lavon Culhane of Sioux Falls; Wilma Sandvig of Newport, R.I.; many nieces and nephews.
A Vigil Service was held Nov. 23, 2008, at West Center Chapel. Funeral Mass was held on Nov. 24, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Omaha. Interment was at Calvary Cemetery in Omaha.
