An article published in early December 1934 stated a new Amateur Radio club was organized in Monmouth for fans of short-wave radio work, with about a dozen experimenters present. John Keith Irey, W9PLN, was selected as president with Richard Strand, W9RPY, vice president, and Henry Hubbard Pattee (unlicensed at the time) as Secretary. People from around this area of the state were invited to join, with plans for demonstrations and field days. They also encouraged the elimination of any interference to neighbor's receiving sets. A contest was announced to name the new club. John was listed under the call sign of W9PLN in the 1934 and 1936 call books residing at 220 South 11th Street in Monmouth, with license terms being 3 years at that time. In 1946, W9PLN was reissued to Paul Russell Hunter of Wichita, Kansas; Paul's call sign was altered to W0PLN with the creation of the 10th call sign district. John was relicensed as W9PLN as of 1958, residing at 312 South E Street, Monmouth, and remained there in the amateur radio callbooks until 1968 (two 5-year license terms). He may have been one of those disenfranchised by "Incentive Licensing" which took effect in in 1967 and greatly reduced his operating privileges.

John married Miss Kathryn Thulin at the Grace Methodist Episcopal Church in Burlington, Iowa on 12 August 1935, by Rev. P. C. Kennedy. They were attended by Mrs. Gertrude L. Conley and Fred L. Green, both of Burlington. The bride attended Monmouth High School for 2 years and graduated from Burlington Business College. John graduated Monmouth High School, attended Monmouth College, and was employed by Western Stoneware Company.
