On the Aug 22, 1862, Oliver enlisted in the 12th Regiment, Kansas Volunteer Infantry. While in the line of duty he was exposed to disease of the back and spine which resulted in chronic lung problems. He returned home Stanton Ks, but tradgedy soon befell him, his wife, Margaret, along with his daughter Martha and son William died in 1868. He re-married Anthusa L. Carey on Nov 24, 1868. They had two children, Clarence, b. Oct 10, 1869, and Luticia A., b. May 11, 1873. Oliver finally succumbed to his health issues on Mar 14, 1876 and is buried in Stanton Cemetery.
